Isn’t that so 2010? <\/p>\n Not in the slightest. <\/p>\n Any digital marketer with a half a brain will tell you the first place to start when growing a business is by building an email list. And if you are trying to grow your music career, then you are by default looking to build a business. <\/p>\n You NEED an email list. It’s not negotiable. <\/p>\n Here are some quick stats<\/a> on why you need an email list:<\/p>\n That’s HALF of the world’s population. Your fans are using email, and they are checking it. Daily. Email is the ONLY way you can directly communicate with your fans, since just about all social media platforms are now “pay-to-play”, which means they won’t let hardly any of your fans see your posts unless you pay for ads.<\/p>\n Reason 2 <\/p>\n People are way more likely to buy through email than just about any other means online. In fact, for every $1 you spend on email marketing, you can expect an average return of $42<\/strong>. Of course, this is dependent on how many products you have to sell (besides just music), but that’s a topic for a different post.<\/p>\n Reason 3 <\/p>\n Email is personal, more personal than even social media. You can communicate directly with your fans and build a relationship so that they go from being fans to SUPERFANS. The difference being that Superfans will buy just about everything you put out, whereas fans might just casually follow you. Let’s face it, we’re artists. We don’t like getting bogged down in tech and monotony. We need a tool that is simple and easy to use, while not sacrificing features such as automation, segmentation, and more.<\/p>\n Attribute 2 <\/p>\n Most email newsletter tools out there just aren’t build with creatives in mind, and as a result, it can sometimes feel like you’re trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. We need an autoresponder tool that’s on our side!<\/p>\n Attribute 3 <\/p>\n I’m determined to help end the cliche of the “starving artist”, that said, a lot of us aren’t working with much in the budget department. You need to invest in your music business to see success, but you also can’t break the bank on the way there.<\/p>\n The great news is that after all of my searching and trying out multiple tools, I’ve found THE BEST email newsletter tool for musicians. ConvertKit. <\/a><\/p>\n ConvertKit has each of the three attributes above, and then some! <\/p>\n ConvertKit makes it easy to build your list (even if you don’t have a website) thanks to their beautiful and easy to use landing pages. <\/p>\n From there, it’s incredibly simple and intuitive to send out emails and set-up automations so you easily bring each new subscriber into the world of your music and convert them into a Superfan. <\/p>\n ConvertKit is the epitome of low tech\/high functionality. <\/p>\n There’s been a pretty steep learning curve with all of the email service platforms I’ve used (and I’ve been using them since at least 2010). <\/p>\n Not the case with ConvertKit. <\/p>\n Everything is organized in an easy-to-find and intuitive manner.<\/p>\n You don’t have to worry about getting lost in endless pages. <\/strong><\/p>\n Segmentation & tagging is immensely important to the success of your email marketing, and ConvertKit gives you all the tools you need in an easy-to-use, visual interface. <\/p>\n This becomes increasingly vital the more products you have to sell. <\/p>\n For example, say you’re wanting to promote your album to your fans. Using ConvertKit’s tagging feature, you can know who has already bought your album, and who hasn’t. <\/p>\n Therefore, you can send that email ONLY to the people who haven’t bought yet, and avoid burning out those who have already purchased. <\/p>\n You can even get uber-specific if you want.<\/p>\n Maybe your most popular song is titled “Thai Curry”, and you created an epic T-shirt to go with it.<\/strong><\/p>\n You can curate a list of all of the people who have bought or signed up for that song, and then send a promo email JUST to them showing how cool that shirt is. <\/p>\n The possibilities with segmentation go on and on, but in a nutshell, it allows you to promote to your audience much more frequently without burning your audience out because you’re only promoting to one segment at a time. <\/strong>Other email service providers will do the same thing to one degree or another, but I haven’t seen any that make it as easy and simple as ConvertKit. <\/p>\n Automation is another vital feature you want, and it can allow you to generate sales passively. <\/p>\n When someone signs up for your email list, you can have automatic emails sent out to them that take them on a journey toward becoming a bigger fan of you and your music. <\/p>\n You can then end that journey with an offer for them to purchase from you.<\/strong> <\/p>\n And this can all be done automatically with ConvertKit in just a matter of seconds. <\/p>\n ConvertKit was one of the first tools to offer the ability to A\/B test your email subject lines.<\/p>\n This means you can actually create 2 subject lines for your emails when you send them out. ConvertKit will show one headline to 15% of your audience, and the other headline to a different 15% of your audience. <\/p>\n ConvertKit will then see which subject line gets more opens and then send the remaining 70% of your audience the winning subject line. <\/p>\n The bottom line is that ConvertKit helps you maximize how many people actually open your emails, which means more engagement and sales for you. <\/strong><\/p>\n The best way to get people on your email list is to offer them a free song in exchange for their email address. <\/p>\n You can create a webpage or put a form on your website where people can put in their information, and then ConvertKit can automatically send them the free song. <\/p>\n Now you might be wondering…<\/p>\n “But wait, I don’t have a website. You now know that they are someone who is interested in your merch. <\/p>\n You can then set-up an automation inside of ConvertKit so that when someone clicks a link to look at a T-Shirt, they are automatically added to an email sequence that drips out emails to them promoting more merch. This is so powerful because you are only promoting to people who have already raised their hand and said they’re interested, thus allowing to grow your business, passively, without being spammy, or burning out your list. <\/p>\n The user interface is really easy to use and navigate, and simply looks good. Again, ConvertKit<\/a> was made specifically for bloggers and creators, not techies. <\/p>\n It’s clean, pleasing to the eye, and an unobtrusive key to growing your music business. <\/p>\n If you’re serious about growing your music career, you’re going to want to get a WordPress website eventually. <\/p>\n ConvertKit knows this, and therefore they have made their tool so that it easily integrates with WordPress. <\/p>\n You just need to download the ConvertKit plugin, hook it up with your API key (easy to find in your account area). Then select from a drop down list the forms you would like embedded at the bottom of your post. <\/p>\n And then you’re done!<\/p>\n Now you have an easy way to convert visitors to your website into email subscribers and Superfans! <\/p>\n Not a marketing expert? No problem!<\/p>\n ConvertKit has already created some done-for-you email sequences that you can simply copy, and then paste in your email content. <\/p>\n This makes following up with your subscribers easy, and leads to more sales for you! <\/p>\n This will save you a ton of time, so you spend more of it making music and building your list. <\/p>\n I’m not a techie, and have had questions on occasion. The great thing is ConvertKit has amazing customer service. <\/p>\n Their tutorials and blogs have all the answers and you\u2019ll be able to find what you are looking for with a simple search.They also have detailed explanations for how to integrate services with ConvertKit. But if you really do need help, I can simply open a live chat and their team is super helpful. I usually get a response within a few hours and have everything cleared up within a day.
